Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne

Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (29 May 1643 – 15 May 1695) was a Scottish peer and the son of John Lyon, 2nd Earl of Kinghorne.

He married Helen Middleton, daughter of John Middleton, 1st Earl of Middleton and wife Grizel Durham, on 23 August 1662. They had six children:

  1. John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1663–1712)
  2. Lady Grizel Lyon, married (1665–circa 1721) David Ogilvy, 3rd Earl of Airlie and had issue.
  3. Patrick Lyon (1669–1715)
  4. Lady Adelaide Lyon (1676–1698)
  5. Charles Lyon (1679–1692), died young.
  6. Lady Elizabetta Lyon (1686–1739), married Charles Gordon, 1st Earl of Aboyne and had issue, married Patrick Kinnaird, 3rd Lord Kinnaird had issue, married Capt.Alexander Grant no issue

John inherited the title of Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne from his father as well as Castle Lyon ( now Castle Huntly) with had been purchased by 1st Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1614. Legend has it that his daughter, Adelaide Lyon fell in love with one of the manservats of the house and began plotting an elopement with him. When the plot was discovered, John locked his daughter away in one of Castle Lyon's towers. When word reached the girl that her love had been executed, she threw herself out of the tower window, plunging to her death. Now known as the White Lady of Castle Huntly, the ghost has been spotted wandering the grounds, or else in the window of the tower from which she allegedly hurrled herself.
